Maximizing Grafts for Natural Results

Our NYC long hair FUE transplant is performed by growing the hair longer on the back and sides of the scalp beforehand. On the day of the procedure, this longer hair is elevated, and a thin band is then shaved. The follicular unit grafts will then be harvested from this shaved band. At the completion of the procedure, the hair is combed down to cover the extracted donor regions fully and completely. The longer the hair is grown, the wider the band that can be shaved and the more grafts that can be harvested for the procedure.

What is Long Hair FUE and how is it different from a standard FUE hair transplant?

Long Hair FUE harvests and places follicles while keeping surrounding hair longer, so there is little to no visible shaving. Standard FUE usually requires trimming the donor area very short, which can make signs of the procedure easier to notice during the first days of healing.

Who is a good candidate for Long Hair FUE?

It can be a strong option if you prefer a discreet recovery, wear your hair longer, or need to return to public or on-camera work quickly. Candidacy depends on donor density, hair characteristics, pattern and stability of hair loss, and your goals. A consultation confirms whether Long Hair FUE, a fully shaved FUE, or a staged plan will serve you best.

Will people be able to tell I had a procedure right away?

Most patients look presentable quickly because longer hair helps conceal tiny scabs and redness. Expect minor swelling or pinkness for a few days, with scabs typically shedding in 7 to 10 days and early growth starting around three to four months. Final maturation continues for 9 to 12 months.

How many grafts can be done with Long Hair FUE and does it affect results?

Session size is often smaller than a fully shaved FUE because harvesting through longer hair takes more time and requires careful visibility. When performed correctly, graft survival and naturalness are comparable. Your plan may use multiple sessions or a hybrid approach to reach the density you want.

Is Long Hair FUE performed manually or with robotic assistance?

Dr. Wolfeld may use manual, motorized, or automated tools to harvest grafts while preserving surrounding length. The exact method depends on your hair characteristics, the targeted zones, and efficiency and visibility during harvesting.
